Vaginal Wetness. What porn wants us to think it is, and what it really is!

When it comes to the world of porn, we would often be mistaken in thinking that a ‘successful’ orgasm looks like a lot of fluid dripping out of our vulvas.  On top of that, in porn, it seems any woman is just ready to have anything rammed up inside her with minimal to no foreplay involved.

For a long time, the sexual arousal of the female has focused on how wet the woman is.  Is she wet enough for intercourse?  However, some women can be sexually aroused and produce a lot of vaginal wetness.  In some cases, it can feel like their undies are soaking.  On the other hand, some women can be just as sexually aroused, produce minimal or no moisture, and feel and appear quite dry.

There are two main types of fluid a woman can produce sexually.  The first is lubrication, and the second is often referred to as female ejaculation.

Let’s talk about lubrication to start with.  What we know and see as vaginal wetness, aka lubrication, is a transudate fluid.  What is a transudate fluid?  When aroused, blood pressure in our pelvic region forces fluid from the capillaries through intracellular gaps of the vaginal epithelial cells.  This fluid is a mixture of plasma, protein, and dead epithelial cells.  For the transudate fluid to be produced, we need good blood flow to the pelvic region, assisted by Nitric Oxide.  Simply put, nitric oxide is produced due to sexual arousal of the parasympathetic nerves.

So we need the nitric oxide to help provide good pelvic blood flow and blood pressure to produce that transudate fluid, right?  The exciting part is that steroid hormones, particularly estrogen, enhance nitric oxide.  So when our levels of estrogen change, so does how well nitric oxide does its job.  This is why you will see variations in vaginal lubrication during a woman’s menstrual cycle, as her estrogen levels change, as well as when she gets older and her natural levels of estrogen drop.  One of the key concerns for women during menopause regarding their sexual health is that they find a big difference in how lubricated they feel, and the inner walls of their vagina begin to thin.

The second fluid commonly mentioned is female ejaculation.

Let’s be clear: What you see in porn with women orgasming and a cup or more of water coming out is not female ejaculation.  What you are watching is women pissing themselves.  Female ejaculation is a fluid produced by the paraurethral glands and is at most 2-4mls in volume.  Studies show that it looks like a watered-down version of fat-free milk, tastes slightly sweet, and does not smell urine.  However, in some cases, it may smell like urine because it is ejaculated from the urethra, and some residual urine may be left in the urethra at that time.  Most women won’t ever experience a female ejaculation; in some cases, the fluid can drain directly into the bladder.

The practice from what we see in porn of copious amounts of fluid being ejaculated is not female ejaculation.  This practice of urinating on orgasm will, at best, lead to bladder prolapses.
